About Trienens Institute Faculty Affiliates

Trienens Institute Faculty Affiliates represent collective expertise across the University, bringing an interdisciplinary perspective to inherently complex local and global sustainability and energy challenges.

Affiliates retain appointments in home departments, but self-identify with the broader Northwestern sustainability- and energy-related community of practice that is facilitated by the Trienens Institute. Membership is open to all Northwestern faculty members whose teaching and/or research activities intersect with our core research priorities:

  • Climate and Decarbonization
  • Ecosystems and Resilience
  • Energy and Infrastructure
  • Markets and Public Policy
  • Society and Global Change
  • Sustainable Materials

Trienens Institute Faculty Affiliates are expected to actively participate in Trienens Institute-sponsored activities and exhibit an enthusiasm and willingness to advance Northwestern’s capacity to play a role in meeting our planet’s climate and energy challenges. They also utilize the Trienens Institute and its resources as a point of convergence, sharing trends, information and teaching resources, and collaborating on research.

Faculty Affiliates benefit from:

  • Trienens Institute-directed semiannual funding calls, including resources for seed proposals, equipment, research teams, commercialization services, and demonstration projects. Faculty affiliates may also have access to ad hoc travel, registration, and/or professional development funding, as available.

  • Research administration services, FOA monitoring and proposal development (including access to the Trienens Institute academic, non-profit, and corporate partner network for proposals), and post-award management (for team science proposals managed through the Trienens Institute).

  • Exposure to donor and sponsored gift development opportunities to fund sustainability and energy projects and research areas, including individuals, foundations, and corporations.

  • A dedicated marketing and communications team to promote your research and scholarship with stories, social media, videography, etc. Faculty Affiliates may also request Trienens Institute co-sponsorship of programming and events.

  • Teaching/guest lecture opportunities
