Education

The education component of ISEN's mission includes undergraduate and graduate course offerings on the topics of sustainability.  Beginning in the Fall of 2012, an undergraduate certificate in Energy and Sustainability will be offered, consisting of the three core undergraduate ISEN courses and four electives from a pre-approved selection of 60+ offerings.

ISEN's unique, interdisciplinary approach to education involves team teaching, drawing faculty from a variety of schools at the University. ISEN has designed and is rolling out a series of courses that are attracting students throughout the University, from the physical sciences and engineering to journalism, the social sciences, music, business, and communication.  Since its first course was offered in 2009, more than 900 students have taken one or multiple ISEN courses.

ISEN’s Curriculum Committee plays a central role in the development and approval of new courses.  In addition to the current undergraduate sequence - ISEN 210, ISEN 220, ISEN 230 and ISEN 390 - and graduate sequence - ISEN 410 and ISEN 430 – ISEN also plans to roll out ISEN 420, CO2 Science, Engineering and Policy, in Spring 2014, and new ISEN 390 opportunities as they become available.

You can find of summary of all energy & sustainability offerings across all schools at the undergraduate and graduate levels in this section of the ISEN web site.

Twenty Northwestern students are gearing up for a summer in China studying the development of sustainable green energy technologies as Wanxiang Fellows. The program has doubled in size since last year's inaugural class. The Wanxiang Fellows Program is one of two study abroad programs co-sponsored by ISEN, the other traveling to Bonn, Germany.
ISEN is pleased to continue working with mechanical engineering faculty member, Eric Masanet, who will teach ISEN 210 during fall quarter. The course benefits from his expertise in energy and resource systems, energy technology systems, and product life-cycle systems.
