Michelle Halle Stern
Michelle Halle Stern is an adjunct associate professor within Northwestern's Master of Science in Energy and Sustainability (MSES) Program.

Michelle is the President and Founder of The Green Facilitator, where she facilitates strategic planning and integrative design process for organizations seeking to address global environmental imperatives.
Prior to launching her own firm, Michelle held sustainability leadership roles in architecture, engineering, and non-profit organizations. Accomplishments include building one of the country’s first in-house green building initiatives and orchestrating the founding of one of the first chapters of the US Green Building Council.
During her 25-year sustainability career, Michelle has managed energy benchmarking and LEED certification projects for small developers, world-class institutions, and Fortune 500 companies. She has collaborated on green building ordinances and design guidelines for the public sector, and prototype green building specifications for 3 major fast-food brands.
Michelle has a long history as an educator. She was a member of USGBC Faculty for 12 years and is currently a member of WELL Faculty. In addition to joining the MSES team, she has been an adjunct faculty at Northwestern University since 2015, teaching “Systems Thinking for Sustainable Design” and “Metrics of Sustainability” in the Master of Project Management program.
Michelle’s awards include the first Chapter Leader award for the Illinois Green Building Council, the Illinois Green Building Council Emerald Award for Intent to Matter, and admission to the inaugural class of LEED Fellows.
A licensed architect and professional engineer, Michelle holds two degrees from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign (BS Architectural Studies, BS Civil Engineering) and one degree from the University of Illinois Chicago (MS Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences).
When not golfing or negotiating with her 3 girls whose pick it is for movie night, she is singing jazz standards or dreaming about skiing in the Rocky Mountains.
