Wild Roots

May 2010, Students and staff gathered in May to plant the inaugural Wild Roots garden. Wild Roots is a living, student-directed project intended to serve the evolving educational and social needs of the Northwestern community. Products grown shall be directed back into the local food supply, and caretakers will maintain the utmost commitment to sustainable practices. The garden is located outside the southern entrance to Norris, along the entire western edge of the lawn.

Earth Day 2010

April 22, 2010. Earth Day 2010 featured Mt. Trashmore, a visual representation equivalent to six hours of the campus' average waste flow; a Green Open House, featuring various student group projects; and a 40th anniversary-panel comprised of the organizers of Project Survival. Project Survival was a Northwestern teach-out event in 1970, predating the first Earth Day by several months.

Jean-Michel Cousteau

April 22, 2010 Since first being "thrown overboard" by his father at the age of seven with newly invented SCUBA gear on his back, Jean-Michel has been exploring the ocean realm. The son of ocean explorer Jacques Cousteau, Jean-Michel has investigated the world's oceans aboard Calypso and Alcyone for much of his life. Honoring his heritage, Jean-Michel founded Ocean Futures Society in 1999 to carry on this pioneering work. He has produced over 80 films, received the Emmy, the Peabody Award, the 7 d'Or, and the Cable Ace Award. We were honored to host him as the keynote speaker on Earth Day!

Climate Wise Women: April 13, 2010

This month, four women -- community activists from the South Pacific Islands, Uganda and Mississippi -- began a 30-city, 18-country speaking tour. On Tuesday, April 13, the foursome presented "Climate Wise Women: A Conversation on Women's Global Response to Climate Change" at Northwestern University.The Climate Wise Women -- including a community leader from Mississippi, a climate change journalist from the Cook Islands and a rural farmer from Uganda -- discussed the effects of climate change on women, children, families and communities around the world.

Climate Change and Human Health - February 18, 2010

One Book One Northwestern event featuring experts Helen Binns, professor of pediatrics and preventive medicine at Children's Memorial Hospital, Doug Sisterson, operations manager for the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) Climate Research Facility at Argonne National Laboratory, and Laurie Zoloth, director of the Center for Bioethics, Science and Society and professor of medical ethics and humanities at Northwestern University. The science behind climate change, as well as its potential health impacts and ethical implications, will be presented briefly, followed by an audience-driven discussion.

NU Basketball: Purple Goes Green - February 17, 2010

One Book co-sponsored programming with Green Cup for back-to-back Big Ten games: the Men's Basketball team against Penn St. on February 17th and the Women's Basketball team against Indiana on February 18th. Free "Purple Goes Green" headbands were given to all students and prize drawings and games at halftime for members of the dorm, frat or sorority that brought the greatest number of fans.

NetG LEED Tour - February 16, 2010

In February, NetG, together with One Book One Northwestern, were given tours of Winthrop Condominiums, a new LEED Gold certified building located in Evanston

Project Survival Reunion - January 24, 2010

Members of Project Survival held a 40-year reunion to commemorate the first major academic conference of modern American environmentalism. Project Survival, an all-night "teach-out" sponsored by Northwestern Students for a Better Environment and other local organizations, preceded by a few months — and helped lead to — the activities of the first nationally-celebrated Earth Day. Due to that fortuitous scheduling, Project Survival was able to attract a distinguished roster of guests and participants from around the country, from the political sphere, and from the NU faculty.

Climate Change and the National Parks - January 19, 2010

As part of its 2009-2010 Speaker Series, The Program in Environmental Policy and Culture (EPC) explored the effects of Climate Change on the US National Park system, with selected analysis from Troy Hamon of Katmai National Park and Reserve (Alaska), Paul Ollig of Glacier National Park (Montana) and Laura Castellini of Golden Gate National Recreation Area (California). Co-sponsored by One Book One Northwestern and the Initiative for Sustainability and Energy at Northwestern (ISEN).

Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. - December 2, 2009

SEED's Fall Speaker, Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. spoke to a full house at Northwestern's Cahn Auditorium. Mr. Kennedy's speech, entitled "The Green Gold Rush", explored sustainable business and energy independence as keys to economic revitalization. Co-sponsored by ISEN and One Book, among others.

One Book Garden Project - Fall Ground Preparation - October 27, 2009

In collaboration with Facilities Management and Norris Center, One Book One Northwestern has undertaken the planting of a vegetable garden on the south lawn of Norris. Students, faculty, and staff all participated in clearing and preparing the ground before winter.

Inauguration of Morton O. Schapiro - October 9, 2009

Northwestern celebrated the Inauguration of Northwestern's 16th President, Morton O. Schapiro, at SPAC. In the morning, Thomas Friedman sat on an Energy & Sustainability panel with ISEN co-director Mark Ratner, and gave the afternoon's keynote speech.
